Who can ride a horse?Ages 6+ can ride a horse. Ages 6-12 are required to wear a helmet (we will provide helmets). No double riding. Every guest that rides, must be on their own horse. The weight limit to ride a horse is 300lbs.

What if I don’t want to ride a horse? Can I still come?If you would like to join the tour, but cannot or prefer not to ride a horse, we have a ride along option where you can ride in a ranch vehicle. That way, you can still participate in the tour and take in the sites all the same. *You must reserve a seat in a vehicle when booking your tour. Up to 3 seats available per tour. They are available on a first come, first serve basis.

Can I bring my own horses?Yes, you can bring your own horses to ride. We will provide a pen and water for them. We can accommodate up to 10 personal horses in addition to our trail horses in a single reservation. For a $20 fee per horse, you can drop your horse(s) off at Painted Mesa to stay overnight. We have 10 stalls available. You must be able to drop off by 5pm the day prior to your reservation. Please indicate at time of booking that you'd like to reserve spots. They are available on a first come, first serve basis. *Painted Mesa is not liable for any risk/damage to your horse(s) while they staying at our facility.

What should I wear for the tour?Wear long pants and closed toed shoes. Bring a hat and sunscreen for protection from the sun. A jacket is recommended due to temperature swings. It can be sunny and 75°, but cold with wind.

What should I bring with me for the tour?To get the most out of your time at Painted Mesa, we recommend you bring a water bottle, jacket, and hat with you. The sun can be harsh, but it can be sunny and 75 degrees and still cold with winds. We also recommend bringing sunscreen, binoculars, and a camera with you. We will have helmets available to anyone that wants one. There are bottles of water for purchase at main camp, should you not bring any or need additional water.

What are the trail rides like?Every ride is unique! You'll be taken out on the trails by our guides to explore the Petrified Forest and Painted Desert. While you're out with the cowboys you'll also be a part of our ranch operations. They'll show you some of the daily tasks of a ranch hand. Our trail rides are not always single file, and the difficulty can vary based on the experience of the riders. Our guides will make the decision on whether or not guests can go above a walk or take different paths.

Are there restrooms on site?There is a portable bathroom at main camp, and there will be opportunities to use it before and after the ride, but be prepared to spend a few hours away.

What is included in the meal?Our cowboy style meals offer a taste of home-cooked goodness. We offer a rotating menu of mains, like BBQ, steak sandwiches, and roast beef. You'll be treated to a hearty plate of meat, that is paired with homestyle sides, such as potatoes, beans, and bread. Contact us to learn about allergy and food-sensitive alternatives that we offer.

Do you have allergy-friendly meal options?We try our best to accommodate every guest with allergy-friendly alternatives for our meals, but we cannot guarantee it. You must let us know at time of booking if there are members in your party that require substitutions. For more details on meal substitutions and what we can accommodate, give us a call or email us. If we cannot accommodate your food restrictions, we encourage you to pack a cooler to bring a lunch or dinner with you.

Can I bring my dog?If you are traveling with your dog(s), we will have kennels available for reservation at no extra cost. Our staff will look after them while you’re on your tour. For the safety of our horses, riders, and wildlife, pets are not allowed on the trails. Each kennel can hold 2-3 dogs. *You must reserve kennel spots at time of booking. Call or email with any questions about kennel space. They are available on a first come, first serve basis.

Do you have overnight accommodations for guests?Overnight trailer parking the night before your booking is allowed, however, we don't have any hookups or other overnight accommodations. You are welcome to park and stay in your trailer at no extra cost, but you must let us know in advance. What is your refund policy?No refunds for no-shows or cancellations within 48hrs of reservation start time. If you do need to cancel your reservation, contact us to cancel. Cancellations made before the 48hrs will receive a full refund.
